What a difference a month makes! The murder of George Floyd ignited a global uprising. We are demanding justice and visibility during a global pandemic while the world is watching. However, I've noticed something missing from the conversation...Afro Women! Breonna Taylor was murdered in her home on March 13th and there have been no arrests of the officers who made this fatal lack of judgment. To add insult to injury the police report just released has missing and false information and one of the LMPD officers involved has allegations of sexual assault and harassment...where is the justice?
When we talk about equity and racial justice it is important to highlight crimes against Afro-American women, Native or Indigenous women and Afro-trans women. In fact, crimes against self-identified Black Trans Women are so high there is a public safety crisis in their community. According to the Human Rights Campaign women of color made up four out of five anti-trans homicides. SAY HER NAME! We want justice for all people...but especially those of us who are systemically and consistently marginalized and treated as if our lives don't matter. AFRO LIVES MATTER, WOMEN'S LIVES MATTER, BLACK LIVES MATTER! I invite you to sit in circle and start a conversation in your community. Use these conversations to start actions steps you can take to make sustained changes. We are stronger...together! Comments are closed.
